Museums with distinct personality
Museum buildings, ideally, should reflect what they muse about. They should relate to the content and blend with it. Some do, most dont. One of the most incongruous museum buildings i have seen is the Luxor Museum. Its a swank building with a very modern display; many love it, i hate it. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquity looks more like a godown- mu... more...

London Calling !
I was visitng London after almost 6 years, and since this was purely a social visit without any work or regimented sight seeing, I was a bit excited. My excitement was not due to the prospects of watching a football game, as buying 4 tickets at 80 pounds each was not my definition of fan madness; or visitng the Lords and Oval, Wimbledon or Wembley,... more...

VOLTAIRE
Few have made an impact on ideas, thoughts and liberty as Voltaire did.‘Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities’ ’ I disagree with every word you say, but will defend till my end your right to say it.’ ’ In general, the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one class of citizens to giv... more...

Galileo
Of those who did so much but are remembered only for a fraction of their achievments the one who stnds out is Galileo.  Galileo’s most famous invention was the telescope. With this telescope, he was able to look at the moon, discover the four satellites of Jupiter, observe a supernova, verify the phases of Venus, and discover sunspots. His discover... more...

Duniya Rang Birangi
Who says that Reality Shows have no reality and are only for entertainment! South Korea recently selected its first astronauts from a televised reality show where 36000 participated. The first stage was a Marathon, where 26000 were discarded. The remaining 10000 underwent a series of physical- and later- mental tests- all of them televised- before ... more...

Yeh Duniya !
More than 2 million have been killed in the wars between Hutu and Tutsi, 2 tribes in Central Africa. A 14 year old sees her parents killed, and is left to raise her 5 younger siblings. She is raped, humiliated, destroyed, and forced to take shelter as a menial hand on a farmhouse. Here she is raped again and again, and finds she is pregnant. As sh... more...

Globalisation ?
(Reproduced in the general interest from the BBC Site) In the narrow back alleys of Lucknow city's Vikas Nagar area, a group of women sit on a rooftop soaking in the winter sun. It's a weekday February afternoon, the men folk have gone to work and small children are asleep in this north Indian city. The older ones have just returned from school, th... more...

Jodha Akbar
To me this movie is a struggle between Screwwalla (The Producer) and Gowarikar (The Director) Such magnificience could come only from the former, less from the latter. It looks to be more about elephants and horses than about Jodha and Akbar.I found it funny that credit should be given to the great AB and Shotgun Sinha., Truly a tribute to our cult... more...

Paris Dakar Rally- Now a Memory
A sign of our times, where news of various kinds affects everyday life and events is the shifting of the Paris- Dakar Rally to South America. Perhaps the most grueling motor sports, the Dakar Rally has sections for Motorcycles, Cars and Trucks competing in different sections. The race originated in 1978, after a racer got lost in the African desert... more...

2 Old Books
There has been a lot of comment on technology and how it will shape our future life. Whenever we talk futuristic, the two books that stand out are BRAVE NEW WORLD and 1984- Classics not only of our time, but of all times. One of the better analysis of these two is by Francis Fukuyama in his 'Our Posthuman Futire' Relevant passsages from this are ver... more...

Sapnay aur bhi hain
I am definitely feeling better today. Perhaps it has something to do with the call I got from a placement consultant. I am not redundant yet. That’s a very heartening thought. It was rather foolish of me to think that I would end up without a job. Sometimes, the state of your mind is such that you tend to make mountains out of molehills. Even, with...  more...

Significant Names
The other day, one of wifey’s female friends had come visiting and the two women were giggling away to glory, cracking girlie jokes that the male of species is singularly incapable of understanding.  Wifey’s friend had a son too; a real cute little bloke who was trying all his stunts to impress my 5 year old daughter. Infinity and Eternity
One day I and God were talking. I: Does the universe have a boundary? God: Sure. It does. I: Really?? Everybody keeps saying that the universe is infinite and eternal. God: (laughs) Do you really understand the words infinite and eternal? I: Of course, infinite space is a space so big that it is not finite; similarly, eternal time. God: It is funny...  more...

Phir Subah Hogi
Though Phir Subah Hogi is loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment published in 1866, the film is actually more of an emotional plea for social justice in 'Nehruite' India and is a fine example of political comment combined with humanitarian compassion. The years following Indian Independence saw the entire socio-political system un...  more...

Sowing the seeds of a future society
By Ken Whitehead, Growth is MadnessCivilisation as we know it will no longer exist within 30 years. This bleak conclusion is not one I have arrived at lightly.
